BMW Engine Oils

Proper oil use is necessary to avoid engine damage during long periods between servicing. Always adhere to the recommendations on the engine oil labels for each vehicle.

Below is an oil application chart. Please refer to S.I. 11 08 98 for more information.

Checking Thickness of Brake Linings

Checking brake lining thickness is required during all services including Oil Services.

The outer brake linings can be checked without removing the wheels (except 750iL and Z8 front brakes). Move the car until opening for the brake lining wear indicator can be seen through the rim spokes.

Insert special tool 34 1 260 through rim into opening for the brake lining wear indicator.

Press special tool onto the brake lining. Slide ring (1) in direction of arrow as far as it will go and read the measured value.

A: Brake Disc
B: Brake lining and backing plate

Minimum thickness for brake linings is 3.0 mm.

Microfilter Replacement

The microfilter is an electrostatically charged filter that captures all particles down to a size of 5 microns. The microfilter removes such particles as pollen and asphalt dust. A plugged microfilter will create a serious reduction in air-flow to the interior cabin and may cause the blower to stop working due to overheating of the final stage.

Replacement of the fresh air microfilters is required during the Oil Service and all Inspections on vehicles with the extended service intervals. Replacement is required during Inspections on earlier vehicles.
