Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Shift Lock

Shift Lock Solenoid Control

All Systems:
A solenoid mounted on the range selector locks the range selector lever in Park or Neutral with the engine running, and prevents the selection of a gear (forward/reverse). The lock is released when the brake is applied.

Shift lock will remain locked with an engine speed above 2500RPM regardless of brake pedal application.

The solenoid/lock is normally "off", and activated to lock the selector in park/neutral. The solenoid receives power from the TCM internal relay, and is energized by the TCM with a switched ground.

A brief delay for activation of the shift lock has also been programmed in the TCM for normal gear selection (ie: from drive to reverse). The lock out protection is not active when the transmission is in failsafe.

The TCM is programmed to activate the shift lock when TD is present. A brief delay is programmed in the TOM for normal gear selection (ie: while moving the range selector from drive to reverse). The shift lock function is not active if a road speed signal is present or when the transmission is in fail safe.
