Subject
Transmission Fluid Thermostat Replacement

Model
Z4 with 2.5 or 3.0 liter engine and automatic transmission. From start of production through August 2003.

Complaint
Service engine soon light on and/or fault code 279B (map cooling, not currently present) stored in DME memory.

Cause
Defective transmission fluid thermostat.

Measure
If the above situation is encountered, replace the transmission fluid thermostat with a new one having part number 17 11 2 249 366. Do not replace the engine thermostat unless diagnosis reveals additional faults caused by insufficient engine warm up or poor heat output complaints.
