SUBJECT
Board Monitor Reverts to Telephone Menu after Sleep Mode

MODEL
E46 (3 Series) from 3/05 to 8/05 production with Premium Package (ZPP) or BMW Assist(TM) (SA 639) and Navigation (SA 609)

E53 (X5) from 4/05 to 9/05 production with Premium Package (ZPP) or BMW Assist(TM) (SA 639) and Navigation (SA 609)

E83 (X3) from 3/05 to 8/05 production with Premium Package (ZPP) or BMW Assist(TM) (SA 639) and Navigation (SA 609)

E85 (Z4) from 4/05 to 9/05 production with Premium Package (ZPP) or BMW Assist(TM) (SA 639) and Navigation (SA 609)

SITUATION
After the vehicle goes to sleep, the Board Monitor (BM) does not retain the last screen the customer used. The BM always defaults to the Telephone menu after sleep mode. This only occurs if a handset has been paired to the vehicle.

The following circumstance causes the first to occur:

For E46 and E53:

During the Enter sleep Mode phase (approximately 1-2 minutes), the ignition is switched off (Terminal 30) and is switched back on (Terminal > = R)

For E83 and E85:

The ignition is switched off (Terminal 30) and is switched back on (Terminal > = R) within 20 seconds. &line;

For all Series listed:

After a vehicle that has entered sleep Mode, a period of at least 14 seconds lapses between waking up (e.g. door opened) and vehicle start (Terminal > = R).

CAUSE

Telematics Control Unit (TCU) software

PROCEDURE

On a customer complaint basis only, follow the procedure as outlined below:

1. Before installing the new TCU, remove one copy of the Electronic Serial Number (ESN) label and place it on the repair order for reference during warranty claim entry. You will be asked for the new TCU "ESN" when submitting a claim in DCSnet. Refer to SI B01 10 05 for more details.

The second ESN label of the TCU should be affix over the existing label in the Owner's Manual insert (P/N 01 49 0 157 963).

2. Replace the TCU. Refer to WebTIS for replacement instructions.

3. NOTE: In order that the TCU replacement is properly recorded, FASTA must be activated in the DISplus/GT1 For details on activating FASTA, refer to SI B07 07 01.

4. For E83 and E85 vehicles go to step 6.

5. For E46 and E53 vehicles code the TCU with DIS CD43 or higher.

6. Code the TCU per SI B09 05 01 (Coding, Individualization, Programming) Procedure A using CIP 19.01.00 or higher. The software is expected to be available in late September.

7. Using DISplus/GT1, select "Diagnosis" and delete any stored fault codes.

8. Test the BMW Assist service for proper operation by placing a test call using the SOS button.

Note:
The MFL button on the steering wheel must not be used.
