SUBJECT
E46, E85 with M54 and ZF SMG - OBD Communication

MODEL
E46 (330i) with M54 and ZF SMG transmission from 08/01/04 up to 12/31/04

E46 (330Ci, 330Cic) with M54 and ZF SMG transmission from 09/01/04 up to 12/31/04

SITUATION
The GS30 SMG transmission and DME engine modules programming, as original installed, may interfere with the testing equipment of independent facilities when attempting to establish communication with the vehicle. As a result, vehicle may not be able to pass the state emissions inspection test.

This diagnostic software error would not cause any drivability problems, nor would cause any increase in vehicle's emissions level.

CORRECTION
On a customer complaint basis only, reprogram both the DME and the SMG control modules using the current version of Progman as described in SI B09 05 01 (Coding, Individualization, Programming) Procedure B.

Use only an approved BMW battery charger set to "Power Supply" mode and properly configured to the proper battery AH rating.
