August 2005
Technical Service

This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.M. B62 202 04 dated May 12, 2004.

SUBJECT
Fuel Consumption Display Shows an Inaccurate Reading

MODEL
E46 (3 Series)
Vehicles produced March 31, 2002 to February 28, 2005.

SITUATION
The value shown in the display for the Average Fuel Consumption shows unrealistically high values. The value in the display may rise to as high as 99.9 mpg. The correct fuel consumption value is restored once the Average Fuel Consumption is reset.

CAUSE
Data overflow in the formula used to calculate average consumption. This occurs if the Fuel Consumption display is not reset for an extended period of time. The situation only occurs if the total consumption since the last reset exceeds 283 gallons (e.g. at 25 mpg, this occurs after 7075 miles).
No other on-board computer functions are affected.

CORRECTION
In case of customer complaint, advise the customer that the problem may be corrected by regularly resetting the Average Fuel Consumption display.
For demanding customers, install a revised Instrument Cluster SW 37, or later (available from 3/2005).
