Replacing Pulse Generator On Crankshaft (M54 / M56)

Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Switch off ignition.
- Check stored fault messages.
- E46 only:
Remove reinforcement plate on front axle support.

CAUTION: The section Removing and installing reinforcement plate on front axle support contains important installation instructions.

- If fitted:
Remove vacuum reservoir for exhaust flap.

All models:


NOTE: Installation location of pulse generator for crankshaft is underneath starter motor.







NOTE: For a better overview, this work step is shown on an engine that has been removed.

Unlock plug (1) and remove.
Release screw (2).
Remove pulse generator (3).

NOTE:
- Interrogate fault memory of DME control unit.
- Now clear the fault memory.
