Active Steering (AL Active Steering Up To 03/07)
Functional description, see BMW Technology:
TIS -> Document -> SI Technology -> 32 01 03001
Diagnosis instructions
Commissioning/adjustment of the active steering is necessary during or after the following work:
- axle adjustments
- work on the steering column
- after replacement or programming of the active steering control module
- after replacing or programming the steering Column Switching Center (SZL): E60/61/63/64
- after replacing the steering Column Switching Center (SZL): E90/91, E87
- after replacing or programming the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC)
- on calibration of the steering-angle sensor
- after replacing the steering gear
Here, select the service function Commissioning/Adjusting active steering and work through it (automated operation).
The function can be found at the following path:

Angular range of the cumulative steering angle sensor
The steering movements permit the following angular ranges of the total steering angle:
E60/61: +/- 506 degree
E63/E64: +/- 526 degree
With increased steering momentum, the total steering angle can be slightly enlarged. If the vehicle is on the ground with the engine running (full power-assisted steering), the angular range at normal steering momentum for the E60/61 is approx. +/- 500 degree.
General information
The power supply of the vehicle was interrupted by disconnecting the battery or deactivating the battery main switch.
Procedure for activating the active steering without the BMW diagnosis system.
- Connect the battery or activate the battery main switch
- Start the engine. The following Check Control message appears: active steering inactive
- Move the steering wheel once to the left-hand limit position and once to the right-hand limit position (alternatively, the vehicle can be driven at approx. 30 - 40 km/h)
- Switch off ignition, switch off terminal 15
- Start the engine; the active steering is now once again fully functional
The fault memory of the active steering control module must be deleted, as at least one fault memory entry is still present. This fault memory entry is caused by the invalid message regarding the driver steering angle after the first engine start.
