Campaign - DME Reprogramming
SI B12 08 08Engine Electrical Systems
April 2008
Technical Service
PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.
SUBJECT
Service Action: MY '05/'06 E53 with M54 and GM5 - Reprogram DME
MODEL
E53 (X5) with M54 engine and GM5 transmission produced 09/2004 - 10/2006
SITUATION
The vehicle's NOx emissions may exceed the legally mandated limits.
In order to remedy this situation, BMW is conducting a Service Action to reprogram the DME control module on all affected vehicles. With the completion of this campaign, the software in the E53 DME control unit will be updated as described in SI B09 05 01 (Coding, Individualization, Programming), Procedure B.
The original DME program would not cause any driveability problems.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves X5 3.0i A vehicles with M54 engines and GM5 transmissions which were produced from 09/14/2004 up to 09/21/2006.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The chassis number ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
CORRECTION
Reprogram the DME control module using Progman V28.02 or higher.
Always use the latest version of Progman with a hardwired connection to the DK (diagnostic head) interface.
Use only the approved BMW Deutronic battery charger (PN 99 00 0 003 944) set to the "Power Supply" mode, and properly configured to both the proper battery AH rating and higher 14.8 programming voltage. Refer to SI B04 11 02 and SI B04 27 06 for additional information.
The vehicle battery must be fully charged and at shop temperature prior to beginning all programming.
Important Note/Helpful Hint:
Prior to SSS programming, connect the vehicle to the DIS/GT1 and perform a short test on the DME control module only. From the Diagnosis/Control Unit Functions, read both programmed and basic DME control module numbers ("Identification A and B"). In the unlikely event of a DME programming failure or interruption, you may be able perform a recovery procedure by the manual entry of the original DME programmed and basic numbers.
This Service Action has been assigned code number 515. After the vehicle has been checked and/or corrected, obtain a label (SD 92-335) and:
A. Emboss your BMW center warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
B. Punch out code number 515 (2), printed on the label; and
C. Affix the label to the B-pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one, because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
