SUBJECT
Trunk Lid Intermittently Does Not Open or Latch

MODEL
[NEW] E90

[NEW] Vehicles produced from February 28, 2011 to June 30, 2011

SITUATION
Intermittently the trunk lid does not pop open when using the remote, or latch when closing. If the vehicle is driven and the trunk is not closed fully, a Check Control message will be displayed in the instrument cluster.

CAUSE
The trunk lid is out of tolerance. When opening or closing the trunk lid, the latch rubs against the striker because of insufficient clearance.

PROCEDURE

1. Inspect the trunk latch for scratch marks that indicate that the latch is engaging the striker improperly.

2. Replace the latch if scratch marks are found as per ISTA Repair Instructions "51 24 100 Removing and installing/replacing rear lid lock (upper section)."

3. Replace the striker as per ISTA Repair Instructions "51 24 130 Removing and installing/replacing striker for rear lid lock."

4. Install a spacer plate (P/N 51 24 7 348 321) between the striker and the body before installing the new striker.

5. Check the trunk lid operation by opening and closing the trunk 10 times, using the remote key and inside vehicle trunk release button. Ensure that the latch does not contact the top of the striker and new scratch marks do not appear on the latch.

6. Install a second spacer plate if the latch still contacts the top of the striker. Retest the system 10 times again.

7. Program the vehicle using ISTA/P 2.47.7 or later.

Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.

For information on programming and coding with ISTA/P, refer to CenterNet / Aftersales Portal / Service / Workshop Technology / Vehicle Programming.

Note:
When the ISTA system message displays: "Battery voltage only "XX.XX" V. Please connect charger." Note the displayed battery voltage reading in the repair order comments section.
