Timing Chain: Service and Repair

Fig. 30 Valve timing marks:

1. Remove front cover as outlined previously. Loosen rocker arm pivot bolts evenly so that some lash is present between rocker arms and valves.
2. Remove oil slinger, cam gear, crank gear and timing chain.
3. Install key in crankshaft, if removed.
4. Install cam gear, crank gear and timing chain with timing marks aligned, Fig. 30. Torque cam gear bolt to 64 ft. lbs. on 1982 models, or 70 ft. lbs. on 1983-85 models.
5. Install oil slinger.
6. Install front cover.
