Fuel Filter: Description and Operation

Fuel Filter:

Fuel Pump And Sender (Typical):

DESCRIPTION
The Fuel Injection system uses an in-line filter. The filter is located at the rear of the car, in front of the fuel tank. The filter housing is constructed of steel with a quick-connect fitting and a threaded outlet fitting. The threaded fitting is sealed with an O-ring, which is replaceable. The filter element is made of paper, and is designed to trap particles in the fuel that may damage the injection system. There is no service interval for fuel filter replacement. Only replace filter if it is restricted. If an element should ever become plugged, the engine may stop running. An engine failure caused by a plugged filter element may be preceded by a hesitation or sluggish operation.

FUEL PUMP STRAINER
A woven plastic filter is located on the lower end of the fuel pick-up pipe in the fuel tank. This filter prevents dirt from entering the fuel line and also stops water from entering the fuel system, unless the filter becomes completely submerged in water. This filter is self-cleaning and normally requires no maintenance. Fuel blockage at this point indicates that the fuel tank contains an abnormal amount of sediment or water. Therefore, the fuel tank should be removed and thoroughly cleaned and the tank filter replaced.
