Mirrors: Description and Operation

Each outside mirror has two reversible mirrors. Each motor mirror contains an Electronic Circuit Breaker (ECB). The resistance in the ECB increases if a motor is overloaded. The resistance returns to normal after the voltage is removed from the motor terminals.

One motor adjusts the mirror view up and down. The other motor adjusts the mirror view left and right. The driver operates a switch that controls the polarity of the voltage to the mirrors. The mirror select switch directs the voltage to the right or left outside mirror.

When the left outside mirror is selected and the outside remote control rearview mirror switch is in the UP position, battery voltage from circuit 1140 is applied to circuit 89 and the up/down motor in the left outside mirror. The outside remote control rearview mirror switch supplies a path to ground through circuit 82, the up contacts of the switch and circuit 750. The left up/down motor runs and turns the mirror up.

If the outside remote control rearview mirror switch is in the DOWN position, the same motor receives voltage from circuit 82 while circuit 89 is grounded. The motor runs in the opposite direction.

The right/left motor operates in a similar manner. When the outside remote control rearview mirror switch is in the LEFT position, circuit 82 receives battery voltage and circuit 81 is grounded through the switch. The motor runs and moves the mirror left. When the right switch is pressed, the motor receives battery voltage through circuit 81 and ground through circuit 82. The motor runs in the opposite direction in order to move the mirror right.

The right outside motor works in a similar manner to the left outside mirror when the mirror select switch is moved to the right position and the appropriate position switch is operated.

Circuit 293 supplies voltage to the HEATED MIRROR fuse in the fuse block. From the HEATED MIRROR fuse, voltage is applied to the left side and the right side outside rearview mirrors through circuit 267. The left side and the right side rearview mirrors are connected to ground from G301 through circuit 750. When voltage is applied, this causes the defogger within the left side and the right side OUTSIDE REARVIEW MIRRORS to defog the mirrors.

The defog cycle last 10 minutes when the following conditions exist:
^ The ignition switch is turned to the RUN position.
^ The rear defogger switch is pressed for the first time.

Any further operation will result in 5 minutes defog cycles. The defog cycle is reset to 10 minutes when the ignition switch is turned to the OFF position and back to the RUN position.
