Parking Brake Transmission/Transaxle Park Mechanism Check

PARKING BRAKE AND AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION/TRANSAXLE PARK MECHANISM CHECK

WARNING: When performing this check, the vehicle could begin to move. Personal in jury or property damage may result. Make sure there is enough room in front of the vehicle, in case the vehicle begins to roll. Be ready to apply the regular brake immediately should the vehicle begin to move.

Parking Brake
To check the parking brake's holding ability: park on a fairly steep hill, with the vehicle facing downhill. Apply both the regular and the park brake. Then with the engine running and transmission/transaxle in NEUTRAL, slowly remove foot pressure from the regular brake pedal. Do this until the vehicle is held by the parking brake only.
If the parking brake fails to hold the vehicle, repair the system.

Park Mechanism
To check the automatic transmission/transaxle PARK mechanism's holding ability: with the engine running, shift the transmission/transaxle to PARK, then release all brakes.
If the PARK mechanism fails to hold the vehicle, repair the system.
