Diagnostics Process - Variable Effort Steering (VES)

IMPORTANT: Complete the following servicing steps for the ABS system and/or the MAGNASTEER(R) system in order. Failure to follow the steps in order may result in the loss of important diagnostic data. Failure to follow the steps in order may also lead to difficult and time consuming diagnostic procedures.

1. Perform the following vehicle preliminary diagnostic inspection:
- Inspect the MAGNASTEER(R) solenoid actuator.
- Inspect the MAGNASTEER(R) solenoid actuator electrical components.
- Inspect the EBTCM electrical connector.

2. Perform the Variable Effort Steering Diagnostic System Check. Diagnostic System Check - Variable Effort Steering (VES)
3. If a DTC is displayed, select DTC history to note the last malfunction that occurred.
4. Test drive the vehicle while using the automatic snapshot feature of the scan tool. Verify that the following conditions exist:
- No DTCs are present
- Mechanical component malfunctions are present
- Failure is intermittent and not reproducible

5. If the above conditions exist, test drive the vehicle while using the automatic snapshot feature of the scan tool.
6. Perform the following operations while test driving the vehicle:
- Normal acceleration
- Normal stopping
- Normal turning maneuvers

7. If the failure is not reproducible, refer to Enhanced Diagnostics to determine if the malfunction should be diagnosed further based on frequency of failure.
8. Clear the MAGNASTEER(R) DTC when all of the system malfunctions are corrected.
