Timing Cover: Service and Repair

Engine Front Cover Replacement

^ Tools Required
- J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter

Removal Procedure





1. Remove the right engine mount bracket.
2. Remove the drive belt tensioner assembly.
3. Remove the crankshaft balancer.
4. Remove the crankshaft sensor shield.
5. Remove the crankshaft sensor.
6. Remove the oil pan to engine front cover bolts.





7. Remove the engine front cover attaching bolts.
8. Remove the engine front cover.
9. Inspect the timing chain for overall in and out movement. Movement should not exceed 25 mm (1 inch).
10. Inspect the timing sprockets for wear.
11. Clean the gasket mating surfaces at the cylinder block.
12. If the oil pan gasket is excessively swollen, the oil pan must be removed and the gasket replaced.
13. Clean and inspect the engine front cover.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the engine front cover gasket.





2. Install the engine front cover.
3. Apply sealant GM P/N 12346004 (Canadian P/N 10953480) or equivalent to the bolt threads.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

4. Install the engine front cover attaching bolts.
^ Tighten the engine front cover bolts to 20 Nm (15 lb ft). Use the J 36660-A in order to rotate the bolts an additional 40 degrees.
5. Install the oil pan to the engine front cover bolts.
^ Tighten the oil pan bolts to 14 Nm (125 lb in).
6. Install the drive belt tensioner assembly.

Important: Do not adjust the crankshaft sensor.





7. Install the crankshaft sensor.
8. Install the crankshaft sensor shield.
9. Install the crankshaft balancer and bolt.
10. Install the right engine mount bracket.
