Ignition Coil: Service and Repair



IGNITION COIL(S) REPLACEMENT

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

IMPORTANT: If the ignition coil requires removal proceed to step 1, if the ignition coil and bracket requires removal proceed to step 8.




1. Remove the intake manifold cover.
2. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose from the intake manifold.




3. Disconnect the engine harness electrical connector (1) from the ignition coil.




4. Disconnect the spark plug wires (2, 4, and 6) from the ignition coil.




5. Disconnect the spark plug wires (1, 3, and 5) from the ignition coil.




6. Remove the ignition coil bolts.
7. Remove the ignition coil from the bracket.




8. If the ignition coil and bracket requires removal perform the following steps, remove the engine harness clip (1) from the ignition coil bracket.




9. Remove the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) clip from the ignition coil bracket.




10. Remove the ignition coil bracket bolts/nuts.
11. Remove the ignition coil bracket.
12. Remove the ignition coil bracket studs, if necessary.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

IMPORTANT: If the ignition coil bracket requires installation proceed to step 1, if the ignition coil requires installation proceed to step 6.




1. Install the ignition coil bracket studs, if necessary.

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice.

Tighten the studs to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).

2. Install the ignition coil bracket.
3. Install the ignition coil bracket bolts/nuts.

Tighten the bolts/nuts to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).




4. Install the HO2S clip to the ignition coil bracket.




5. Install the engine harness clip (1) to the ignition coil bracket.




6. If only the ignition coil required removal perform the following steps, install the ignition coil to the bracket.
7. Install the ignition coil bolts.

Tighten the bolts to 4.5 N.m (40 lb in).




8. Connect the spark plug wires (1, 3, and 5) to the ignition coil.




9. Connect the spark plug wires (2, 4, and 6) to the ignition coil.




10. Connect the engine harness electrical connector (1) to the ignition coil.




11. Connect the brake booster vacuum hose to the intake manifold.
12. Install the intake manifold cover.
