Steering Gear Boot Replacement

Special Tools

J-35566 - Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers

For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools (Tools and Equipment).

Removal Procedure

1. Remove the steering linkage outer tie rod. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement (Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement).
2. If equipped, remove the steering gear heat shield.




3. Remove the steering linkage inner tie rod nut (5) from the steering linkage inner tie rod.
4. Remove the steering gear boot clamp (4).
5. Cut and discard the steering gear boot clamp (2).

Note: After removing the boot, inspect the inner tie rod for evidence of corrosion or contamination. If none is evident, continue with the repair. If corrosion or contamination is evident, replace the steering gear.

6. Remove the steering gear boot (3) from the steering gear (1).

Installation Procedure




1. Install the steering gear boot (3) to the steering linkage inner tie rod.
2. Install the new steering gear boot clamp (2) onto the steering gear boot (3).
3. Install the steering gear boot to the steering gear (1). Ensure the steering gear boot is seated in the assembly groove of the steering gear.
4. Use the J-35566 - pliers in order to crimp the steering gear boot clamp.




5. Install the steering gear boot clamp (1).
6. Install the steering linkage inner tie rod nut (2).
7. If equipped, install the steering gear heat shield.
8. Install the steering linkage outer tie rod. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement (Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement).
