Thread Repair

Damaged threads may be reconditioned by performing the following steps outlined below. General purpose thread repair kits are available commercially.

Caution: Wear safety glasses in order to avoid eye damage.

1. Determine the size, the pitch, and the depth of the damaged thread.





2. Adjust the stop collars on a cutting tool and tap to required depth if necessary.

Important: Refer to the kit manufacturer instructions regarding the size of the drill and size of the tap to be used.

3. Drill out the damaged thread.
4. Clean out the chips.
5. Tap the hole ensuring that the tap is kept lubricated with light engine oil.

Important: Avoid build-up of chips. Back out tap every few turns and remove the chips.

6. Clean the thread.
7. Thread the thread insert onto mandrel of installer. Engage tang of insert onto end of mandrel.
8. Lubricate the insert with light engine oil (except when installing in aluminum).

Important: The insert should be flush to one turn below the surface when correctly installed.

9. Install the insert.
10. Break the tan off with a drift pin if the tang of the insert does not break off when backing out the installer.
