Starter Motor: Service and Repair

STARTER MOTOR REPLACEMENT

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.




1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
3. Remove the positive battery cable starter motor lead nut (1) from the starter.
4. Remove the positive battery cable lead from the starter.
5. Remove the starter solenoid terminal lead nut (2) from the starter.
6. Remove the starter solenoid terminal lead from the starter.




7. Remove the starter motor bolts (2, 3).
8. Remove the starter motor (1).

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE




1. Install the starter motor (1).

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

2. Install the starter motor bolts (2, 3).

Tighten
Tighten the starter motor bolts to 60 N.m (44 lb ft).




3. Install the starter solenoid terminal lead to the starter.
4. Install the starter solenoid terminal lead nut (2) to the starter.

Tighten
Tighten the starter solenoid terminal lead nut (2) to 4 N.m (35 lb in).

5. Install the positive battery cable lead to the starter.
6. Install the positive battery cable starter motor lead nut (1) to the starter.

Tighten
Tighten the positive battery cable starter motor lead nut (1) to 13 N.m (115 lb in).

7. Lower the vehicle.
8. Connect the negative battery cable.
