Starter Motor: Service and Repair

STARTER MOTOR REPLACEMENT (LA3, LY9)

REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. Remove the starter heat shield.




2. Remove the starter solenoid "S" terminal nut (1) and disconnect the lead (2) from the starter.




3. Remove the starter terminal nut (2) and disconnect the battery positive cable (1) from the starter.




4. Remove the starter motor mounting bolts.
5. Remove the starter motor from the engine.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE




1. Position the starter motor to the engine.
2. Install the starter motor mounting bolts

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

Tighten
Tighten the starter motor mounting bolts to 40 N.m (30 lb ft).




3. Connect the battery positive cable (1) to the starter and install the starter terminal nut (2).

Tighten
Tighten the battery positive cable to starter terminal nut to 12.5 N.m (111 lb in).




4. Connect the lead (2) to the starter solenoid and install the starter solenoid "S" terminal nut (1).

Tighten
Tighten the starter solenoid "S" terminal nut to 5 N.m (44 lb in).

5. Install the starter heat shield.
