Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Wiper Arm: Testing and Inspection

Wiper Arm Tip Pressure Check

1. Remove the wiper blade from the arm. Refer to Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement (Removal and Replacement).

2. Attach a scale to the wiper arm tip and measure the force required to lift the wiper arm perpendicular to the windshield to the normal working height of the wiper arm (the height with the blade attached).
Important: Tension must be gauged with the wiper arm slightly up from the windshield 90 degrees to the wiper arm shaft. Tension will be less when the wiper arm travels past the centerline to the service-up detent.

The force required should be 9.8 newtons (35 ounces) for the driver side arm, and 7.8 newtons (28 ounces) for the passenger side.
3. Replace the wiper arm if tip pressure is not within specifications. Refer to Windshield Wiper Arm Replacement (Service and Repair).
