Water Pump: Service and Repair

EXC. 1984-88 CORVETTE

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain cooling system.
2. Remove fan shroud or upper radiator support, as applicable, then remove accessory drive belts.
3. Remove fan and pulley from water pump hub.
4. Remove upper and lower alternator brackets. On Camaro, remove AIR brace and bracket.
5. If equipped with power steering, remove power steering lower bracket from water pump and position aside.
6. Remove radiator lower hose and heater hose from water pump.
7. Remove water pump attaching bolts and pump, noting position of bolts for assembly.
8. Reverse procedure to install.




1984-88 CORVETTE

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, and drain cooling system.
2. Rotate belt tensioner counterclockwise to release tension, and remove drive belt.
3. Remove water pump and AIR pump pulleys, and disconnect air management valve adapter from AIR pump.
4. Remove AIR pump, then disconnect fuel supply and return lines. Relieve fuel system pressure before disconnecting fuel hoses.
5. Remove A/C compressor rear braces and lower mounting bolt.
6. Remove nuts securing A/C compressor and idler pulley bracket to water pump and disconnect electrical connector from compressor.
7. Move compressor bracket forward, remove upper mounting bolt and compressor, and secure aside.
8. Disconnect AIR hoses at check valves and AIR pipe at intake manifold and power steering bracket.
9. Remove power steering reservoir bracket and upper alternator mounting bolt.
10. Remove lower AIR pump bracket, then disconnect hoses from water pump.
11. Remove mounting bolts and water pump.
12. Reverse procedure to install.
