Turn Signal Switch: Service and Repair





Directional Signal Switch

The directional signal switch can be removed with the steering column in the vehicle and without disturbing any of the column mountings.

Removal

1. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to: Service and Repair
2. Remove the column to instrument panel trim cover.
3. Remove the rubber bumper and "C" ring plastic retainer (pry up carefully to prevent damage).
4. Place tool J-23063 over the end of the steering shaft.
5. Place 5/16" nut under each leg of the tool.
6. Using the shaft nut, compress the lock plate just enough to remove the "C" ring. Remove "C" ring.
7. Remove the shaft nut, Tool J-23063, the two 5/16" nuts.
8. Lift the lock plate, horn contact carrier and upper bearing preload spring off the end of the shaft.
9. Pull the switch connector out of the bracket on the jacket, remove the harness cover and wrap the upper part of the connector with tape to revent snagging the wires during switch removal.
10. Push the hazard warning knob in and remove the knob.
11. Remove turn signal lever. Pull Straight out to disengage.
12. Remove the switch actuator arm mounting screw and arm.
13. Place the directional signal and shifter housing in "Low" position. Remove the three directional switch screws and pull the switch straight up, guiding the wiring harness out of the housing.

Installation

Notice: It is extremely important that only the specified screws, bolts and nuts be used at assembly. Use of over-length screws could prevent a portion of the column from compressing under impact.

1. Feed the harness connector down through the housing and under the mounting bracket, reinstall the cover on the harness and clip the connector to the jacket.
2. Install the three switch mounting screws, lever and the hazard warning knob.
3. Position pin of signal switch actuator arm into slot of pivot switch assembly and arm into switch slot. Install screw and tighten, Install signal switch lever. Align lever pin with switch slot. Push on lever until seated.
4. Make certain that the switch is in "Neutral" and that the hazard knob is out. Place the upper bearing preload spring, horn contact carrier and lock plate onto the upper end of the shaft.
5. Place Tool J-23063 over the end of the steering shaft.
6. Place a 5/16" nut under each leg of the tool.
7. Using the shaft nut, compress the lock plate just enough to install the "C" ring. Install the "C" ring.
8. Remove the shaft nut, compress the lock plate just enough to install the "C" ring. Install the "C" ring.
9. Install the "C" ring plastic retainer and the rubber bumper.
10. Install the column to instrument panel trim cover.
11. Install the steering wheel. Refer to: Service and Repair
