Corvette
1. Remove rear axle assembly. Refer to ``Rear Axle, Propeller Shaft & Brakes'' for procedure.
2. Remove axle housing cover and allow lubricant to drain.
3. Mount carrier assembly in suitable holding fixture, then remove snap rings retaining yoke shafts and the yoke shafts. Tag snap rings indicating which side they were removed from.
4. Remove bearing cap bolts, then the bearing caps. When removing bearing caps, note matched letters stamped on caps and carrier. During reassembly, the caps must be installed in the exact position they were removed from.
5. Install spreader tool, J-24385-01, adapter, J-24385 and suitable dial indicator set, Fig. 3. Zero indicator and ensure indicator stylus contacts one side of housing opening.
6. While observing micrometer, spread housing with tool. Do not spread housing more than 0.010 inch or distortion could result.
7. Using two pry bars, pry differential assembly upwards to remove. Tag bearing cups and shims to indicate which side removed from.
8. Remove spreader tool to prevent housing from taking a set.
