Brake Shoe: Service and Repair

Fig. 1 Exploded view of rear drum brake assembly:

1. Raise and support rear of vehicle.
2. Remove wheels and brake drums.
3. Remove return spring and auto adjuster spring.
4. Remove leading shoe hold-down spring and pin, Fig. 1.
5. Remove leading shoe and auto adjuster.
6. Remove trailing shoe hold-down spring and pin, then shoe.
7. Remove parking brake cable and lever.
8. Apply suitable grease to the supports on the backing plate where the shoes contact.

9. Reverse procedure to install. Take care not to damage wheel cylinder boots.
