Timing Chain: Service and Repair






Tools Required:
J 22888 Puller
J 5590 Sprocket Installer

Remove or Disconnect
1. Crankcase front cover
2. Align marks on crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket.
3. Timing chain tensioner upper bolt
4. Loosen timing chain tensioner torx bolt as far as possible, but do not remove.
5. Camshaft sprocket and timing chain
6. Crankshaft sprocket using tool J 22888

Install or Connect
1. Crankshaft sprocket using Tool J 5590





2. Compress tensioner spring, and using a suitable tool (cotter pin, nail) insert tool into hole.
3. Timing chain on camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket. Lubricate with engine oil. Lube thrust surface with camshaft assembly lube GM P/N 1052365 or equivalent.
4. Align marks on camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket with tabs on tensioner.
5. Align dowel in camshaft with dowel hole in camshaft sprocket, then install sprocket on camshaft.
6. Draw the camshaft sprocket onto camshaft using the mounting bolt. Torque to specification.
7. Remove chain tensioner pin
8. Crankcase front cover
