Connecting Rod: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure

- Tools Required
- J 5239 Connecting Rod Bolt Guide Set
- J 24270 Cylinder Bore Ridge Reamer

1. Remove the cylinder head(s
2. Raise and support the vehicle.
3. Remove the oil pan.
4. Remove the oil pump.
5. Remove the crankshaft oil deflector.
6. Rotate the crankshaft until the piston and rod assembly to be serviced is at Bottom Dead Center (BDC).

Important: Make identification marks on the connecting rods and the corresponding connecting rod caps.

7. Remove the piston, the connecting rod and the connecting rod bearing.
8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Inspect the piston.
10. Inspect the connecting rod bearings.
11. Inspect the connecting rod cap and connecting rod.
12. Inspect the crankshaft connecting rod journal.
13. Hone the cylinder bore.
14. Clean the cylinder bores with hot water and detergent.
15. Dry the cylinder bores with a clean, dry cloth.
16. Use a clean dry cloth in order to swab the cylinder bores with NEW engine oil.

Installation Procedure
1. Install the piston into its original bore.
2. Raise and support the vehicle.
3. Install the crankshaft oil deflector.
4. Install the oil pump.
5. Install the oil pan.
6. Lower the vehicle.
7. Install the cylinder head(s).
