Backing Plate: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution in Service Precautions.





1. Raise and support the vehicle with suitable safety stands. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the tire and the wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
3. Install the pin into the park brake lever. Refer to Enabling the Park Brake Automatic Adjuster.
4. Remove the rear brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement.
5. Remove the rear brake shoes. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement.
6. Remove the rear wheel cylinder. Refer to Wheel Cylinder Replacement.
7. Remove the rear brake anchor pin.
8. Remove the rear brake backing plate retaining bolts and washers.
9. Remove the rear brake backing plate from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the rear brake backing plate.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

2. Install the rear brake backing plate retaining bolts and washers.
Tighten the rear brake backing plate retaining bolts to 140 Nm (104 ft. lbs.).
3. Install the rear wheel cylinder. Refer to Wheel Cylinder Replacement.
4. Install the rear brake shoes. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement.
5. Remove the pin from the park brake lever.
6. Adjust the rear brakes. Refer to Drum Brake Adjustment.
7. Bleed the brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding (Manual) or Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding (Pressure Bleeding).
8. Install the tire and the wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation or Tire Repair.
9. Adjust the park brake if necessary. Refer to Park Brake Cable Service/Adjustment.
10. Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
