Fuel Pressure Release: Service and Repair

CAUTION: Relieve the fuel system pressure before servicing fuel system components in order to reduce the risk of fire and personal injury.

After relieving the system pressure, a small amount of fuel may be released when servicing the fuel lines or connections. In order to reduce the chance of personal injury, cover the regulator and the fuel line fittings with a shop towel before disconnecting. This will catch any fuel that may leak out. Place the towel in an approved container when the disconnection is complete.

NOTE: Do not perform this test for more than 2 minutes in order to prevent damaging the catalytic converter.




1. Loosen the fuel filler cap in order to relieve any fuel tank pressure.
2. Remove the fuel pump relay (1) from the junction box (2).
3. Crank the engine.
4. Allow the engine to start and stall.
5. Crank the engine for an additional 3 seconds to ensure the relief of any remaining fuel pressure.

CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Cautions and Notices.

6. Disconnect the negative battery cable in order to avoid re-pressurizing the fuel system.
7. Install the fuel pump relay (1) to the junction box (2).
8. Tighten the fuel filler cap.
