Starter Motor: Service and Repair




Starter Replacement (LY7) (3.6L)

Removal Procedure




1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Service and Repair).
2. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).
3. Remove the front catalytic convertor. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement - Left Side (LY7) (Catalytic Converter Replacement - Left Side).
4. Remove the positive battery cable terminal to starter solenoid nut (1).
5. Remove the generator wiring lead (6) from the starter solenoid.
6. Remove the positive battery cable lead from the starter solenoid.




7. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector (1) from the starter.




8. Remove the starter bolts and starter.

Installation Procedure




1. Position the starter motor in the engine block.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).

2. Install the starter bolts and tighten to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).




3. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector (1) to the starter.




4. Install the positive battery cable lead to the starter solenoid.
5. Install the generator wiring lead (6) to the starter solenoid.
6. Install the positive battery cable terminal to starter solenoid nut (1) and tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb in).
7. Install the front catalytic convertor. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement - Left Side (LY7) (Catalytic Converter Replacement - Left Side).
8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Service and Repair).
