Flywheel: Service and Repair




Engine Flywheel Replacement

* J 45059 Angle Meter

Removal Procedure




1. Remove the automatic transmission, if equipped. Refer to Transmission Replacement (Removal and Replacement).
2. Remove the starter, if equipped with a manual transmission. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement (Service and Repair).
3. Remove the clutch, if equipped. Refer to Clutch Pressure and Driven Plate Replacement (Service and Repair).
4. Install the J 43653 (1) to the engine block in order to hold the flywheel.





Note: It may be necessary to remove the chamfer (bevel) from the edge of an 18 mm socket in order to get full engagement on the thin-headed flywheel bolts.

5. Remove the flywheel bolts, if equipped with a automatic transmission.

Note: Do not orientate the flywheel to the crankshaft. It is balanced separately from the engine.

6. Remove the flywheel.
7. Clean the thread adhesive from the flywheel bolt holes. Use a nylon bristle brush to clean the holes in the crankshaft.




8. Remove the flywheel bolts, if equipped with a manual transmission.
9. Remove the flywheel.
10. Clean the thread adhesive from the flywheel bolt holes. Use a nylon bristle brush to clean the holes in the crankshaft.

Installation Procedure




1. Install the flywheel, if equipped with a manual transmission.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).

2. Install the flywheel bolts.

Tighten the bolts to 53 Nm (39 lb ft) plus an additional 25 degrees using the J 45059 .




3. Install the flywheel if equipped with an automatic transmission.
4. Install the flywheel bolts.

Tighten the bolts to 53 Nm (39 lb ft) plus an additional 25 degrees using the J 45059 .




5. Remove the J 43653 (1) from the engine block.
6. Install the clutch, if equipped. Refer to Clutch Pressure and Driven Plate Replacement (Service and Repair).
7. Install the starter, if equipped with a manual transmission. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement (Service and Repair).
8. Install the automatic transmission, if equipped. Refer to Transmission Replacement (Removal and Replacement).
