Axle Shaft Assembly: Service and Repair




Rear Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement

Special Tools

* 7208 - Rear Axle Remover

* J 22610 - Keystone Pliers

* J 22912-B - Rear Pinion and Axle Bearing Remover

* KM-468-C - Holding Tool

For regional tool equivalent, refer to Special Tools Tools and Equipment.

Removal Procedure

Danger:
To avoid any vehicle damage, serious personal injury or death when major components are removed from the vehicle and the vehicle is supported by a hoist, support the vehicle with jack stands at the opposite end from which the components are being removed and strap the vehicle to the hoist.

1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.

2. Remove the rear tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation Service and Repair.




3. Install the KM-468-C - holding tool (1) to the wheel hub (2) with two inverted wheel nuts (3).

4. Support the KM-468-C - holding tool (1) outer end on a safety stand.





Caution: Make sure that the wheel drive shaft nut is fully un-staked to avoid damage to the wheel drive shaft threads during the removal of the wheel drive shaft nut. Failure to follow these instructions could result in wheel, nut, and/or stud damage.

5. Using a chisel (2) and a hammer (3), un-stake the drive shaft nut collar (1).





Note: DO NOT re-use the wheel drive shaft retaining nut must be discarded after removal.

6. Remove and discard the wheel drive shaft retaining nut (1) and the washer (2). Replace with NEW only.




7. Remove the KM-468-C - holding tool (1) from the wheel hub.

8. Remove the wheel speed sensor electrical connector from the speed sensor. Refer to Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Wiring Harness Replacement Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Wiring Harness Replacement

9. Remove the rear park brake cable from the knuckle. Refer to Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement (9C3) Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement (9C3)Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement (9C1) Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement (9C1).

10. Remove the lower control arm from the knuckle. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement Lower Control Arm Replacement.

11. Remove the trailing arm from the knuckle. Refer to Trailing Arm Replacement Service and Repair.





Note: Do not hammer the end of the wheel drive shaft to remove use 7208 - rear axle remover.

12. Using the 7208 - remover (1), remove the wheel drive shaft from the wheel hub assembly.

13. Place a suitable container under the differential in order to collect draining fluid.





Caution: When removing or installing the drive axle, use extreme care not to nick or cut the drive axle oil seal.

Note:

* Do not pull on the interconnecting shaft as it will pull apart the inboard joint.

* Use a suitable tool to pry the inner constant velocity joint out of the differential to release the snap ring.

* Support the wheel drive shaft when removing as the rear sub-frame may cut the inner constant velocity boot.

14. Disconnect the wheel drive shaft (1) from the differential (2).

Caution: When removing or installing the drive axle, use extreme care not to nick or cut the drive axle oil seal.

15. Remove the wheel drive shaft (1) from the vehicle.





Note: The snap ring (1) is a single use part and must be discarded after removal.

16. Remove and discard the snap ring (1) from the inner constant velocity joint (2). DO NOT re-use, replace with NEW only.

17. Inspect the wheel drive shaft assembly for excessive wear and/or damage. Inspect the following:

* Wheel Drive Shaft.

* Inner Joint Boot. For replacement refer to Rear Wheel Drive Shaft Inner Joint Boot Replacement Rear Wheel Drive Shaft Inner Joint Boot Replacement.

* Inner Constant Velocity Joint. For replacement refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Inner Joint and Boot Replacement Wheel Drive Shaft Inner Joint and Boot Replacement.

* Outer Joint Boot. For replacement refer to Rear Wheel Drive Shaft Outer Joint Boot Replacement Rear Wheel Drive Shaft Outer Joint Boot Replacement.

* Outer Constant Velocity Joint. For replacement refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Outer Joint and Boot Replacement Wheel Drive Shaft Outer Joint and Boot Replacement.

Installation Procedure





Note: Ensure that the gap in the snap ring (1) must be at the bottom.

1. Install the NEW snap ring (1) to the wheel drive inner constant velocity joint (2).





Caution: When removing or installing the drive axle, use extreme care not to nick or cut the drive axle oil seal.

2. Install the wheel drive shaft (1) to the differential (2).

Note: Pull the wheel hub assembly outwards to position the wheel drive shaft through the wheel hub assembly.

3. Position the wheel drive shaft through the wheel hub assembly.

4. Install the lower control arm to knuckle. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement Lower Control Arm Replacement.

5. Install the rear park brake cable. Refer to Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement (9C3) Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement (9C3)Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement (9C1) Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement (9C1).

6. Install the trailing arm to the knuckle. Refer to Trailing Arm Replacement Service and Repair.

7. Install the wheel speed sensor electrical connector to the speed sensor. Refer to Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Wiring Harness Replacement Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Wiring Harness Replacement




8. Install the NEW wheel drive shaft washer (2) and nut (1).




9. Install the KM-468-C - holding tool (1) to the wheel hub assembly (2) with two inverted wheel nuts (3).

10. Support the KM-468-C - holding tool (1) outer end on a safety stand.

Note: There are two suitable methods of tightening the wheel drive shaft retaining nut. DO NOT EXCEED THE SPECIFIED TIGHTENING VALUES, otherwise premature bearing failure may result.

11. Preferred Method:

* First Pass: 150 Nm (111 lb ft).

* Second Pass: loosen 180 degrees.

* Final Pass: 425 Nm (313 lb ft).

12. Alternate Method:

* First Pass: 150 Nm (111 lb ft).

* Second Pass: loosen 180 degrees.

* Third Pass: 50 Nm (37 lb ft).

* Final Pass: plus 45 degrees.

13. Remove the KM-468-C - holding tool (1).

Note: The collar should contact the bottom of the drive shaft slot or be evenly split into the center of the drive shaft slot. Holding the rotor from turning will ease the process.

14. Use a suitable tool to stake the NEW wheel drive shaft nut to the wheel drive shaft keyway.

15. Install the rear wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation Service and Repair.

16. Check the differential fluid level. Refer to Rear Axle Lubricant Level Inspection Procedures.

17. Remove the safety stands.

18. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
