Brake Pedal Assembly Replacement

Removal Procedure

1. Remove the steering column opening lower filler. Refer to Steering Column Opening Lower Filler Replacement Steering Column Opening Lower Filler Replacement.

2. Remove the brake pedal position sensor. Refer to Brake Pedal Position Sensor Replacement Service and Repair.

3. Without disconnecting the intermediate steering shaft, lower and position aside the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement Steering Column Replacement.




4. Using a pointed tool, evenly lift the brake pedal pivot retaining cap springs (1) approximately 5.0 mm (0.20 in).

Note: The left and right brake pedal pivot retainers are different. Observe which side of the brake pedal pivot each retainer is located.




5. Using a flat bladed tool, carefully drive the upper and lower tabs through the brake pedal bracket and remove the left brake pedal retainer (1).




6. Using a flat bladed tool, carefully drive the upper and lower tabs through the brake pedal bracket and remove the right brake pedal retainer (1).




7. Compress the locking tabs on the power vacuum brake booster pushrod retainer (1) and remove the brake pedal (2).

Installation Procedure




1. Align the brake pedal pivot notches with the keyways (1) in the brake pedal bracket.




2. Install the power vacuum brake booster retainer (1).

3. Install the brake pedal (2) to the brake pedal bracket.

4. Ensure the brake pedal pivot is fully seated in the brake pedal bracket.

Note: The plastic brake pedal pivot retainers must be installed squarely into the brake pedal bracket. Do not attempt to install the retainers at an angle.




5. Select and install the right brake pedal retainer (1).




6. Select and install the left brake pedal retainer (1).




7. Secure the brake pedal pivot retaining cap springs (1) by pressing the springs downward evenly.

8. Confirm that the brake pedal operates smoothly fore and aft.

9. Secure the brake pedal to the power vacuum brake booster pushrod retainer.

10. Ensure the power vacuum brake booster pushrod retainer locking tabs are fully engaged in the brake pedal.

11. Reposition and install the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement Steering Column Replacement.

12. Install the brake pedal position sensor. Refer to Brake Pedal Position Sensor Replacement Service and Repair.

13. Install the steering column opening lower filler. Refer to Steering Column Opening Lower Filler Replacement Steering Column Opening Lower Filler Replacement.
