700-R4 Automatic Transmission

1. Remove reverse input clutch assembly from input clutch assembly.
2. Remove oil pump to selective washer thrust bearing, then the selective washer.
3. Place input clutch assembly on a suitable workbench with turbine shaft through bench hole.
4. Remove 3-4 clutch plate retainer ring and backing plate, then the 3-4 clutch plates.
5. Remove 3-4 clutch apply plate, then the 3-4 clutch ring retainer plate.
6. Remove forward clutch backing plate retainer ring and backing plate.
7. Remove forward sprag clutch assembly.
8. Remove input sun gear bearing assembly, then the input housing to output shaft lip seal.
9. Remove forward clutch plates, then the forward wave plate.
10. Remove forward clutch apply plate and spacer plate, then the overrun clutch plates.

11. Install clutch spring compressor press tool, No. J-23456, and adapter, No. J-25018, then compress overrun clutch spring assembly, Fig. 42.
12. Remove overrun clutch retainer ring, then the overrun clutch spring assembly.
13. Remove overrun clutch piston, then the inner and outer lip seals.
14. Remove forward clutch housing, then the 3-4 clutch spring assembly, apply ring and piston.
15. Remove forward clutch to input housing O-ring seal.
16. Remove four turbine shaft oil seal rings.
17. Inspect input housing for porosity or damage.
18. Inspect input housing and shaft assembly for the following:
a. All splines for wear and damage.
b. Clogged air check feed passages.
c. Three turbine shaft sealing balls for leaking or looseness.
19. Inspect the four turbine shaft oil seal rings and ring grooves for damage, burrs or cuts.
20. Inspect check valve retainer and ball assembly for damage, free ball movement in the retainer and correct fit of retainer in turbine shaft.
