Removal and Installation

Transmission And Components:




Shift Lever, Boot And Tower:






Remove or Disconnect
1. Shift control lever (132) and boot.

^ Shift tower (142) and the seal, and cover the opening.

^ Raise the vehicle on a hoist.

2. Transmission oil.

3. Propeller shaft. Refer to PROPELLER SHAFT.

4. Transfer case, if used. Refer to TRANSFER CASE.

5. Parking brake and controls. it used. Refer to BRAKES.

6. Exhaust pipes. Refer to EXHAUST.

7. Harness connectors (101) from the transmission.

8. Clutch slave cylinder and lay it aside. Refer to CLUTCH.

9. Screws and the inspection cover (105).

10. Nuts and clamps (108), as used.

^ Note the positions of any lines or wires before removing them.

^ Support the transmission with a jack.

11. Any parts, if needed, for clearance.

12. Crossmember.


Important: Do not let the transmission hang from the clutch. Use guide pins to pull the transmission straight back on the clutch hub splines.

13. Screws (113), spring washers (114) and the studs (109), as used.

^ Remove the top two studs last.

^ Support the clutch release bearing.

14. Transmission (102).

15. Plugs (115), if they are loose or damaged.

^ Note the location of the plugs before removing.


Install or Connect
1. New plugs (115), if needed.


Important:
^ Do not force the transmission into the clutch.

^ Do not let the transmission hang from the clutch.

2. Transmission (102).

^ Shift the transmission into high gear before installing.

^ Put a thin coat of high temperature grease on the main drive gear splines.

^ Install the top two studs first.

Tighten
^ Screws (113) and studs (109) to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).

4. Crossmember.

^ Remove the jack.

5. Any parts that were removed for clearance.

6. Nuts and clamps (108), as used.


Important: Any lines or wires that were moved must be in their original positions.

7. Screws (104) and the inspection cover (105).


Tighten
^ Screws (104) to 18 Nm (13 ft. lbs.).

8. Clutch slave cylinder. Refer to CLUTCH.

9. Harness connectors (101) to the transmission.

10. Exhaust pipes. Refer to EXHAUST.

11. Parking brake and controls, if used. Refer to BRAKES.

12. Transfer case, if used. Refer to TRANSFER CASE.

13. Propeller shaft. Refer to PROPELLER SHAFT.

^ Lower the vehicle.

14. Shift control lever (132) and the boot.

^ Shift tower (142) and a new seal.

15. New transmission oil. Refer to "Drain and Fill".
