iPod Audio Distorted or Inoperative - One or More Speakers

Diagnostic Instructions

* Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure. Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview
* Review Strategy Based Diagnosis for an overview of the diagnostic approach.
* Diagnostic Procedure Instructions provides an overview of each diagnostic category.

Circuit Description

The Apple iPod is connected to the personal audio link (PAL) through a dedicated interface cable. The cable allows the iPod the ability to share serial data communication, audio signals, power and ground with the vehicle.

Circuit/System Verification

Verify customer complaint by verifying that the iPod(R) is in good working condition and adjust the speaker outputs through the radio controls, fade and/or balance.

Diagnostic Aids

The iPod(R) interface connector was not originally designed for an automotive application and is susceptible to vibration and movement damage. It is recommended that excessive movement of the iPod(R) and cable be avoided while driving.

Circuit/System Testing

Important: Verify that the iPod(R) is in good working order and visually inspect the iPod(R) connector cavity for any signs of damage before performing this diagnostic. Verify the proper software has been downloaded from http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/ to the iPod(R) before performing this diagnostic.

1. Ignition ON, Observe the PAL red LED lamp. Verify the red LED lamp is illuminated.

If the PAL red LED is not illuminated, go to Circuit/System Testing (PAL Red LED Inoperative).

2. Verify the radio audio performs normally when not using the iPod(R) function.

If audio is faulty when using regular radio function go to Symptoms - Radio, Stereo, and Compact Disc - Symptoms - Radio, Stereo, and Compact Disc

3. Set the radio to the iPod(R) interface menu and attempt to operate audio from the iPod(R).
4. Gently wiggle the interface harness at the connection to the iPod(R). Verify that audio quality from the iPod(R) is not changed when the connector is wiggled.

If the audio changes quality or drops out, inspect the iPod(R) connector cavity or interface cable for damage. Replace the suspect iPod(R) interface cable or inform the customer that the iPod(R) may be damaged.

5. Ignition OFF, disconnect the PAL wiring harness from the vehicle and the PAL.
6. At the iPod(R) audio signal input, test for an open, high resistance or short to ground between the PAL side of the harness connector and the radio side.

If all circuits test normal replace the PAL.

Circuit/System Testing (PAL Red LED Inoperative)

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the PAL harness connector.
2. Ignition ON, at the PAL harness connector verify that a test lamp illuminates between the harness connector terminal B+ circuit and ground.

If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for an open/high resistance.

3. At the PAL harness connector, Verify that a test lamp illuminates at both harness connector terminal ground circuits and B+.

If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ground circuits for an open/high resistance.
If all circuits test normal, replace the PAL.

Repair Instructions
