SYMPTOM/CONDITION

The 5th speed detent ball and spring as shown in the 1983 FWD Service Manual (#81-270-3005) and in 1983 parts information was deleted in production (Figure 1). Evaluation of production transaxles indicated that the detent ball and spring were not required.

The 5th speed detent ball and spring should not be installed when you have the transaxle disassembled for service, nor should they be installed to try to correct a shift problem in a transaxle that does not have the detent ball and spring.
