Timing Cover: Service and Repair

COVER-TIMING CHAIN REMOVAL





1. Disconnect negative battery (1) cable.
2. Drain cooling system.
3. Remove coolant pressure container.





4. Raise vehicle on hoist.
5. Remove lower splash shield retaining bolts (1) and splash shield (2).
6. Remove accessory drive belts.
7. Remove crankshaft vibration damper.
8. Lower vehicle.





9. Remove timing chain cover bolts (3&4).
10. Remove timing chain cover (2).
11. Discard timing chain cover gasket (1). Remove front crankshaft oil seal from cover (2).

INSTALLATION





1. Inspect and clean timing chain cover sealing surfaces.
2. Before installing timing cover gasket apply a 1/8 inch bead of Mopar Engine RTV GEN II to the parting lines between the oil pan and cylinder block (1)





3. Install timing cover (2) and gasket (1). Tighten M10 cover bolts (4) to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) and M6 bolts (3) to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.).
4. Install front crankshaft oil seal using Special Tool 6780-2 sleeve and 6780-1 installer.
5. Install crankshaft vibration damper.
6. Install accessory drive belts.





7. Install lower splash shield (2) and retaining bolts (1)





8. Lower vehicle.
9. Fill cooling system.
10. Connect negative battery (1)cable.
