Cylinder Head - Removal







REMOVAL - CYLINDER HEAD





1. Perform fuel system pressure release procedure before attempting any repairsService and Repair.
2. Remove clean air hose (1) and air cleaner housing (2)Air Cleaner Housing - Removal.
3. Disconnect negative cable from battery.




4. Open drain cock (4) to drain cooling system into a clean container.
5. Remove upper intake manifoldIntake Manifold - Removal.




6. Remove fastener (3) attaching dipstick tube (1) to lower intake manifold.




7. Turbocharger equipped vehicles: Remove lower intake manifold support bracket (3).
8. Disconnect the fuel supply line quick-connect at the fuel rail assemblyService and Repair.
9. Remove heater tube support bracket from cylinder head.
10. Remove upper radiator hose. Disconnect heater hoses from thermostat housing.
11. Disconnect engine coolant temperature sensor connector.
12. Remove accessory drive beltsAccessory Drive Belt - Removal.




13. Raise vehicle on a suitable hoist.
14. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold.
15. Turbocharger equipped vehicles:
- Remove turbocharger heat shields (1)
- Remove elbow support bracket (4)
- Remove turbocharger support bracket (2)
- Remove elbow (3)





16. Turbocharger equipped vehicles: .
- Remove oil return tube (4)
- Remove oil supply line (1)
- Remove coolant supply line (3)
- Remove coolant return line (2)

17. Disconnect ignition coil wiring connector. Remove ignition coil and plug wires from engine.
18. Disconnect camshaft position sensor wiring connector.
19. Remove timing belt and camshaft sprocketsTiming Belt & Sprockets - Removal.
20. Remove timing belt idler pulley and rear timing belt coverTiming Cover - Removal.




21. Non-Turbo equipped vehicles: Remove fasteners (2) securing power steering pump fluid reservoir (1) and bracket (3) to cylinder head.
22. Remove cylinder head coverCylinder Head Cover - Removal.
23. Remove camshaftsCamshaft - Removal.

NOTE: Identify rocker arm location for reassembly prior to removal.

24. Remove rocker arms.




25. Remove cylinder head bolts in the reverse sequence of tightening.
26. Remove cylinder head from engine block.
27. Inspect and clean cylinder head and block sealing surfaces.

NOTE: Ensure cylinder head bolt holes in the block are clean, dry (free of residual oil or coolant), and threads are not damaged.
