Transfer Case: Service and Repair

1. Remove skid plate, if equipped, and drain transfer case.
2. Disconnect speedometer cable and indicator switch electrical connector, then the parking brake cable guide from pivot, if necessary.
3. Disconnect input and output shafts then support and position shafts aside. Some 1980-81 models equipped with a single piece propeller shaft were assembled with the propeller shaft slip yoke positioned toward the rear axle assembly. When servicing these vehicles, the slip yoke should be positioned as assembled in production whether at the rear axle or at the transfer case.
4. Disconnect shift rods and de-clutch rod, if equipped, from transfer case.
5. Support transfer case with a suitable jack.
6. If transfer case is supported by crossmember, or a support bracket, remove crossmember or the support bracket bolts, then lower transfer case from vehicle.
7. If transfer case is secured to an adapter, remove transfer case to adapter mounting bolts. Slide transfer case rearward to disengage front input spline and lower transfer case from vehicle.
8. Reverse procedure to install.
