Symptom/Condition, Diagnosis & Parts Information

SYMPTOM/CONDITION

I. 1984 EFI (Non-Turbo) Vehicles Only

Upon engine start up "power loss" or "limited" lamp comes on and fault code 13 is generated. This may be due to a momentary interruption of the ignition run J2 circuit as the ignition switch travels from the start position to the run position.

II. All EFI & Turbo (especially applicable to extreme cold weather high altitude areas)

At cold engine start up at temperatures below +10~F (-12~C) the ignition switch drops out for up to a quarter of a second, depending on temperature, quantity, and type of switch lubricant. This drop out causes the mixture to revert to the initial starting level and further inhibits proper engine "run-up". The engine loads up and/or "dies" immediately after start up and may not restart due to mixture being too rich.

DIAGNOSIS

I. 1984 EFI (Non-Turbo) Vehicles Only

If a fault code 13 occurs, proceed to the limp-in mode test as described in the Driveability Test Procedure manual. If the condition still exists, proceed as follows:

NOTE: PART I OF THIS SERVICE BULLETIN DOES NOT APPLY TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH LOGIC MODULE 5226870, 5226966, OR 5226969.
II. 1984-1986 Vehicles With EFI or Turbocharged Engine

If cold no-start symptoms exist, perform the appropriate Driveability Test Procedure to verify that other conditions causing "no-start" are not present. If the condition still exists on an initial cold crank, proceed as follows:
