Disassembly

Fig. 2 Exploded view of Holley model 2280 carburetor:

1. Place carburetor on suitable work stand to protect throttle valves from damage and to provide a suitable work area.
2. Remove air cleaner bolt and retainer assembly.
3. Remove throttle position transducer and bracket assembly from main body, if equipped, Fig. 2.
4. Remove cotter pin from accelerator pump arm link and remove link.
5. Remove bowl vent cover plate from air horn.
6. Remove spring, vent valve actuating arm, its pin and retainer.
7. Remove choke vacuum diaphragm hose from main body.
8. Remove choke diaphragm, linkage and bracket assembly and place aside for individual cleaning.
9. Remove nut and washer that attaches fast idle cam lever to choke shaft, then disengage fast idle connector link from lever and fast idle cam.
10. Remove retaining screws and lift air horn straight up and away from main body, discarding gasket.
11. Remove bowl vent valve seal, disengage spring and lift valve lever, pin and spring assembly straight up, if applicable.
12. Remove retaining clip from ``C'' link and remove link and washer from accelerator pump assembly and operating lever, if applicable, then remove pump assembly.
13. Remove vacuum power valve piston by gently prying up retaining ring tangs.
14. Remove ``E'' clip retaining accelerator pump operating shaft and pull shaft out straight, then remove accelerator pump arm and internal pump lever.
15. Remove mechanical power valve push rod and spring assembly by gently prying off plastic cap and removing ``E'' clip.
16. Remove fuel inlet fitting from main body and discard gasket.
17. Remove float hinge pin retainer, hinge pin, float baffle and float assembly.
18. Using screwdriver, remove main metering jets.
19. Using tool C-4231 or equivalent, remove vacuum and mechanical power valves, ensuring that blade of tool is squarely seated in slot on top of valve to avoid damaging power valve needle. Do not interchange mechanical and vacuum power valve assemblies as the mechanical power valve needle and the vacuum power valve needle are different lengths. The vacuum power valve needle can be identified by an undercut groove located just above the needle stop. The valve seats can be identified by a number stamped on the valve and they must be kept with their respective needle and spring assembly. The mechanical power valve is located on the choke side of the carburetor while the vacuum power valve is located on the throttle side.
20. Remove venturi cluster screws, then lift venturi cluster and gasket up and away from main body and discard gasket. Do not remove idle well tubes.
21. Invert carburetor and drop out weight and check ball.
22. Remove throttle body attaching screws and separate bodies, discarding gasket.
23. Remove idle stop carburetor switch assembly, if equipped, from main body as follows:
a. Remove roll pin that retains ground wire in position and push brass ground switch through plastic insulator.
b. Remove plastic insulator and wire from main body.
24. Remove fast idle cam retaining ``E'' clip, then slide fast idle cam off stub shaft.
25. Remove plastic caps from idle mixture screws in base of carburetor, being careful not to damage screws.
26. Remove idle mixture screws and springs from throttle body.
