These axle assemblies are of the integral carrier housing hypoid gear type with the center line of the drive pinion mounted below the centerline of the ring gear. The drive pinion is supported by two preloaded taper roller bearings and the front and rear pinion bearing cones are pressed on the pinion stem. The front and rear pinion bearing cups are pressed against a shoulder that is recessed within the carrier casting. Drive pinion depth of mesh adjustment is controlled by installing metal shims between the rear pinion bearing cup and carrier casting.
