Engine: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain engine oil.
2. Remove hood and air cleaner duct.
3. Disconnect heater hoses, accelerator cable and throttle cable.
4. Remove fuel filter, then disconnect water level sensor connector and fuel lines.
5. Remove power steering oil pump, if equipped.
6. Disconnect glow cable and gauge unit harness connector.
7. Remove clutch release cylinder from transmission.
8. Disconnect engine ground cable, then the starter motor and alternator wiring harness.
9. Disconnect engine oil cooler hoses and brake booster vacuum hose.
10. Disconnect oil pressure switch harness, then remove front exhaust pipe and radiator assembly.
11. Remove under cover and, on four wheel drive models, remove under skid plate and transfer case protector.
12. Disconnect speedometer cable.
13. Disconnect back-up light switch harness and, on four wheel drive models, 4WD indicator light switch harness.
14. Paint mating marks on differential drive flange and transmission yoke. On four wheel drive models, place transmission in 2H and place hubs in free position.
15. Remove propeller shaft.
16. Support transmission with suitable jack, then remove gearshift lever assembly.
17. Remove rear insulator from transmission, then the No. 2 crossmember.
18. On four wheel drive models, support transfer case with suitable jack. Remove transfer case support insulator and mounting bracket. Remove plate from side frame.
19. On all models, remove engine mounting nuts from front insulators.
20. Attach suitable lifting device to engine and raise engine and transmission assembly diagonally from engine compartment.
21. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque front insulators to engine mounting bracket attaching bolts to 22-29 ft. lbs.
b. Torque front insulators to engine support bracket attaching bolts to 10-14 ft. lbs.
c. Torque No. 2 crossmember to side frame attaching bolts to 40-54 ft. lbs.
d. Torque rear insulator to No. 2 crossmember attaching bolts to 40-54 ft. lbs.
e. Torque plate to side frame attaching bolts to 14-18 ft. lbs.
f. Torque rear insulator to transmission attaching bolts to 14-18 ft. lbs.
g. Torque transfer case support insulator to transfer case mounting bracket attaching bolts to 22-30 ft. lbs.
h. Torque transfer case mounting bracket to transfer case attaching bolts to 14-18 ft. lbs.
