FIGURE 81 - LOOSENING OIL PUMP DRIVEN GEAR BOLT:
REMOVAL
Remove the parts in numerical order shown in Fig. 80, paying attention to the following items.
(1) Insert a screwdriver through plug hole in left side of cylinder block to keep silent shaft in position.
(2) Remove oil pump driven gear tightening bolt.

INSPECTION
Oil Pump
(1) Install drive gear and driven gear to front case and measure gear side clearance.
(2) Check gear contacting surfaces of front case and oil pump cover for step wear.
(3) If side clearance is excessively large or if case or cover has step wear replace front case assembly.
Side clearance:
Driven gear side: .06 to .12 mm (.0024 to .0047 in.)
Drive gear side: .08 to .14 mm (.0032 to .0055 in.)
FIGURE 83 - CHECKING SILENT SHAFTS:
Silent Shafts
(1) Check journals for wear, damage and seizure. If excessive damage or seizure is evident, check bearing as well. If necessary, replace silent shaft or bearing or both.
(2) Check oil hole (passage) for clogging. Clean or repair as necessary.
SILENT SHAFT BEARING REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE
(1) Using Special Tool, Silent Shaft Bearing Puller (MD998371), remove right silent shaft front bearing from cylinder block. When right silent shaft rear bearing is to be removed, remove front bearing first. Otherwise, rear bearing puller cannot be used.
