Vehicle Speed Sensor: Testing and Inspection

1. The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is mounted on the rear of the instrument panel. Refer to COMPONENT REPLACEMENT AND REPAIR PROCEDURES/VSS for procedures in removing the instrument panel.

Mechanical Speedometer Reed Switch Test:

2. Connect an ohmmeter between the reed switch and the reed switch ground.

3. Turn the speedometer shaft using a small screwdriver.
Continuity should exist/not exist several times while the shaft is being rotated.

4. If the test results deviate from above, replace the VSS Sensor.
