Sensor Operation Tests

Troubleshooting Hint: If there is an open or short circuit in the Vehicle Speed Sensor signal circuit, the engine may stall when the vehicle is decelerated to stop.


1. The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is mounted on the rear of the instrument panel. Refer to Instrument Panel for removal procedures.

Mechanical Speedometer Reed Switch Test:

2. Connect an ohmmeter between the reed switch and the reed switch ground.

3. Turn the speedometer shaft using a small screwdriver.
Continuity should exist/not exist several times while the shaft is being rotated.
