Sensor Operation Tests

Troubleshooting Hint: If there is an open or short circuit in the Vehicle Speed Sensor signal circuit, the engine may stall when the vehicle is decelerated to stop.

Vehicle Speed Sensor (Electrical Type):

1. Remove the Vehicle Speed Sensor.

Electrical Speed Sensor Test:

2. Connect a voltmeter to terminals # 2 and # 3 of the VSS.

3. Connect the negative lead from the battery to terminal # 2 of the VSS.

4. Connect the positive lead from the battery to a 3-10k ohm resistor and a lead wire from the resistor to terminal # 3 of the VSS.

5. Connect a second lead wire from the positive terminal of the battery to terminal # 1 of the VSS.
As the pulse generator shaft is rotated, voltage should be indicated on the voltmeter 4 times per shaft revolution.

6. If the test results deviate from above, replace the VSS Sensor.
