Purge Solenoid - Knocking Noise From Engine Compartment

NO: 25-01-98

GROUP: Emissions

DATE: Feb. 6, 1998

SUBJECT:
Knocking Sound Coming From The Engine Compartment

MODELS:

1998 (AN) Dakota
1998 (DN) Durango

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO DURANGOS BUILT BEFORE DEC. 5, 1997 (MDH 1205XX) AND DAKOTAS BUILT BEFORE DEC. 22, 1997 (MDH 1222XX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

A knocking noise can be heard coming from the engine compartment. The noise occurs only while the engine is running and is most noticeable at an idle. The noise may be confused with the sound of a connecting rod bearing with excessive clearance.

DIAGNOSIS:

Open the hood of the vehicle and inspect the "U-shaped" mounting bracket of the purge solenoid. If the U-shaped purge solenoid mounting bracket is facing up (as shown in Figure 1), perform the following Repair Procedure.

If the U-shaped purge solenoid bracket is facing down (as shown in Figure 3), inspect the left purge solenoid mounting bracket stud to ensure that the mounting nut has been removed, the metal spacer has been removed, and a protective cap has been installed onto the stud. If the U-shaped purge solenoid bracket is facing down, the left purge solenoid mounting nut has been removed, the metal spacer has been removed, and there is a protective cap on the stud, further diagnosis is necessary. Refer to the appropriate 1998 Service Manual, Group 9, for engine related diagnosis. Proceed with the Repair Procedure if the purge solenoid mounting nut or the metal spacer has not been removed and/or the protective cap has not been installed.

PARTS REQUIRED:

1 55077081AA Cap, Protective

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves reversing the position of the U-Shaped purge solenoid bracket and installing a protective cap onto one of the purge solenoid mounting studs.

1. Remove the left (driver's side) support bracket mounting nut.

NOTE:
TO PREVENT THE STUD FROM BACKING OUT OF THE COWL PANEL WHEN REMOVING THE MOUNTING NUT, HOLD THE STUD END WITH A 4 MM, 6 POINT SOCKET, WHILE REMOVING THE NUT. IN THE EVENT THAT THE STUD DOES LOOSEN FROM THE COWL PANEL, RE-TIGHTEN THE STUD TO 9 Nm (80 in. lbs.).

2. Remove the metal insert from the mounting grommet on the left side (driver side) of the bracket (Figure 2).

3. Install protective cap (p/n 55077081AA) over the left side (driver side) purge solenoid mounting stud.

4. Remove the solenoid and U-shaped bracket from the bracket assembly attached to the cowl panel. Then, flip the U-shaped bracket over and re-install the bracket to the purge solenoid and solenoid mounting bracket as shown in Figure 3.
